How to Set Up Your RV at a Campsite (Step-by-Step Guide)

How to Set Up Your RV at a Campsite (Step-by-Step Guide)

Arriving at a campsite should be exciting, not stressful. This guide shows you how to set up your RV quickly, safely, and with confidence.

1. Choose the Best Position

Walk the site before parking. A good position saves time and makes setup easier.

Look for:

  • Level ground
  • Space for slide-outs
  • Safe distance from trees, tables, or obstacles
  • Easy access to power, water, and sewer hookups
  • Room for your awning, steps, and outdoor space

Extra Tip:

Think about sun, wind, and privacy. A better position can give you more shade and comfort.

2. Park and Secure the Trailer

Once in position, secure the RV before levelling or unhitching.

What to do:

  • Stop in final position
  • Put tow vehicle or motorhome in park
  • Set parking brake
  • Place wheel chocks immediately
  • Confirm trailer is stable before unhitching

Safety Tip:

Never rely on the parking brake alone. Use wheel chocks every time.

3. Level the RV

A level RV improves comfort and helps appliances work properly.

Step 1: Side-to-side

  • Use a bubble level
  • Place levelling blocks under low-side tires
  • Pull onto blocks until level

Step 2: Front-to-back

  • Use tongue jack or levelling system
  • Raise or lower front until level

Step 3: Stabilize After Levelling

  • Lower stabilizer jacks until they touch ground
  • Apply light pressure only
  • Do not use stabilizers for levelling

Why it matters:

  • Reduces rocking
  • More comfort inside
  • Better stability

4. Connect Shore Power

Now connect campground power safely.

What to do:

  • Inspect pedestal for damage
  • Turn breaker off first
  • Plug in surge protector
  • Connect RV power cord securely
  • Turn breaker back on
  • Test lights, outlets, and appliances inside

Tip:

Carry adapters for 15A, 30A, or 50A hookups depending on your site.

5. Connect Water Supply

Set up fresh water safely and protect your plumbing.

What to do:

  • Use drinking water safe hose
  • Attach pressure regulator first
  • Connect hose to RV inlet
  • Turn water on slowly
  • Check for leaks at all fittings

Tip:

Store fresh water gear separately from sewer gear.

6. Set Up Sewer Connection (If Needed)

If your site has full hookups, connect sewer properly.

What to do:

  • Make sure tank valves are closed
  • Connect hose securely to RV and sewer inlet
  • Use hose support if possible
  • Keep valves closed until tanks are ready to dump

Good habits:

  • Wear gloves
  • Rinse equipment after use
  • Store sewer gear separately

7. Open Slide-Outs and Awning

Now make your campsite comfortable.

Before opening:

  • Check for branches, posts, vehicles, or obstacles

What to do:

  • Extend slide-outs slowly
  • Confirm seals and space inside
  • Open awning carefully
  • Adjust pitch if needed

Weather Tip:

Retract awning in strong wind or heavy rain.
